The drug weighed over 71 pounds

Brothers Giovanni Requeña, 24, and Ellis Requeña, 26, both of Belize City, were busted with over 71 pounds of weed by police at a vehicle checkpoint on the George Price Highway in Hattieville. They were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and taken to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, where they were offered bail of $15,000 each.

They were unable to meet bail, and have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August 28, when they will be returned to court.

The incident occurred at about 2:00 Saturday afternoon in Hattieville. Police said that they were on an anti-drug operation at a vehicle checkpoint in the village when they saw a car deliberately avoid the checkpoint, and divert into the village.

Police quickly chased the car, and found it in front of a store in Hattieville. They went into the store, where they saw two men, who, when they saw them, became very nervous, which prompted police to approach and conduct a search on them.

One of the men was found with a bunch of keys, which he gave police, which was for the car. Police said that when they opened the car trunk, they found two large crocus sacks of weed.

The weed and the two men were taken to the Hattieville Police Station, where the weed was weighed, and the combined weight of the content of both sacks was 3,247 grams, or 71.4 pounds.

The drug was labeled as “Exhibit.”
