Sports2014 Brodies Annual Strong & Weak Doubles Tournament concludes

The Belize Table Tennis Association’s (BTTA) 2014 Brodies Annual Strong & Weak Doubles Tournament took place this past Sunday, July 27, at the BES Auditorium, the home of table tennis.

Following a double elimination format, after a few defaults and no-shows, the event “kicked off” at 9:30 a.m. with 16 Strong & Weak Doubles teams, made up of combinations of junior and senior players, competing for this year’s championship.

In the upper portion of the draw, Petie & Marion Usher made it to the semi-finals by defeating Luis Bardalez & David Portillo, Taye Parkinson & Jaylen Nicholson, and Hector Lopez & Willie Chang, before losing to Billy & Samron Pott.

Eventual champions Billy & Samron Pott made it to the finals by defeating John Delcid & Terry Su, Harem Ochaeta & Matthew Usher, Fabio & Leo Carballo, and Marion & Petie Matus.

After losing to Billy & Samron, Marion & Petie rebounded in the losers’ bracket and made it to the finals by further defeating Carlos Cui & Toni Lui. They went on to lose to Billy & Samron again, 3-0, to take the second place position.

Carlos & Toni took 3rd place by defeating Hector & Willie, who finished 4th.

On hand to deliver the trophies and gift items was Billy Musa, Jr., representing the sponsor, Brodies. He thanked the BTTA for the opportunity to support the development of table tennis and this particular Doubles event, which he promised to sponsor again in 2015.

Trophies, gift cards and a small supply of Monster drinks were presented to all the winners.

Nittaku were the official balls for the event, which were also supplied by the sponsor, Brodies.
