General5 from Dangriga charged in connection with 5 Belmopan burglaries

On Tuesday, November 9, Ponce and Eaton Carr were arraigned in the Belmopan Magistrate?s Court for the burglary of the Belize Companies Registry and the Deputy Registrar?s residence, the dates of which we have been unable to ascertain from police. They were also charged for the burglary at the Small Farmers and Business Bank that occurred on November 4, 2004; Hon. Godfrey Smith?s residence on September 25, 2004; and Victor Perdomo?s residence on October 10, 2004.

Ponce pleaded guilty to the five burglaries and was sentenced to 14 years in prison; Eaton pleaded not guilty and his case was adjourned until November 30, 2004.

Today, Wednesday, Louise, Ethel, Ian and Ponce were also arraigned in the Dangriga Magistrate?s Court for the handling of stolen goods, since, police said, the items stolen in Belmopan were reportedly found in Dangriga.

They were charged for the handling of stolen property from five locations: the Small Farmers Bank and Business on November 4, the residence of Minister Godfrey Smith on September 25, the residence of Victor Perdomo on October 9, and the Belize Companies Registry and the Deputy Registrar?s residence.

All four persons pleaded not guilty to the handling of stolen goods. Ethel and Ian were offered bail in the sum of $3,000 and a surety of the same amount. Louise and Ponce were offered bail of $5,000 and a surety of the same amount. However, they did not meet bail and were remanded to the Hattieville Prison until February 10, 2005, their next court date.

The Palacio sisters, according to police, are the girlfriends of Eaton Carr and Abraham Ponce. The police had stated in a press release, dated November 9, 2004, that the persons arrested and charged would be further investigated for other burglaries in the Belmopan area.
