General71-year-old man, beaten into a coma by 3 intruders, recovering at home

JACINTOVILLE, Toledo District, Thurs. Jan. 28, 2016–Earl Savala, 71, of Jacintoville, who was in the throes of death, has miraculously recovered. With only one machine in the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital breathing for him, and the fact that he was not responding, the family of Savala, who had been declared clinically dead by doctors, was about to unplug him.

Savala ended up in the hospital after being beaten on Saturday in Jacintoville by a fellow villager, 26, who has since been remanded to the Belize Central Prison on previous warrants.

Amandala was informed that Savala had gone to the store to buy fried food for his wife, who was waiting for the food at home, when he was attacked and beaten by his fellow villager. He was in a coma when he was rushed to the Punta Gorda Town Hospital. He was then taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but it appeared that he was not responding to treatment, and he was declared clinically dead.

His family is very encouraged by his improvement and they are praying for his continued recovery.

The attack and brutal beating of Earl Savala is the second incident to occur this year in which an elderly citizen was attacked by thugs.

At about 5:00 on the morning of December, 29, Patrick Grant, 93, of Fern Lane, Belize City, was in his bed when three men gained entry into the house by knocking on his door, telling Grant that his daughter had sent them.

When Grant opened the door, they rushed in, shoving him down. One of the men, who had steel knuckles on his hand, beat Grant in the head and face until his head was swollen.

The thieves then stole his clothes and other belongings and escaped out of the house.

The 93-year-old man managed to crawl outside, where he was seen by neighbors who alerted the police and his family members, and he was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a critical condition.

Grant was in a coma for about 3 days before he began to recover. He has since been discharged and continues to recover at his house, but yesterday, he told Amandala that he was feeling pain in his head and body after the beating.

Grant’s neighbor, in whose possession some of Grant’s stolen belongings had been found, has since been arrested and remanded to the Belize Central Prison and is awaiting trial for the brutal beating.

In a police press brief held at the Racoon Street police headquarters in Belize City, Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie, announced that community police will patrol the communities to check on senior citizens living alone to ensure that they are okay.
