ALBERT’S AND OLD TECHNICAL SHARE LEAD IN OVER 35 BASKETBALL

SportsALBERT’S AND OLD TECHNICAL SHARE LEAD IN OVER 35 BASKETBALL
Last weekend’s scores in Over-35 basketball saw Old Cemetery sending Maria Chang to their fourth straight loss of the season, defeating them by the score of 48-44. Old Cemetery backcourt of Kevin Siroki (12 pts 3 rebs 3 asst 3 steals) and Compton “Speedy” Staine (11 pts 2 rebs) were too much for Peter “Paco” Neal 13 pts 3 rebs and Jimmy Faber 13 pts 9 rebs. In game two of the day, Classic Purex “broke their egg”, winning in convincing fashion over Orange Walk Eagles by the score of 58-41. Classic Purex’s James “Tanga” Saunders was the game high scorer with 21 pts 7 rebs 3 asst, followed by Calvert Quilter with 13 pts 3 rebs. Meanwhile, for the Eagles it was Floyd Sutherland and Kenneth Dawson scoring 12 pts each in the loss. In game three of the day, the duo that Hoops News has been talking about for the past three weeks once again had their way. We are talking about Doug Pendland and Rico Black, the duo which has been leading Old Technical Rebels in every game played so far this season. This time they took it out on the veteran Darren Bovell (14 pts 8 rebs) and the Bulls, walloping them by the score of 54-38. Rico Black totaled 16 pts, while Doug had a double double of 13 pts 10 rebs.

In the final game of the day, Albert’s had their way with Belmopan, winning in an old-fashioned blowout by the score of 70-53, behind Lloyd Leslie 27 pts 10 rebs and Vince “Post” Estrada 25 pts 4 rebs 6 asst. Meanwhile, for Belmopan it was Clifford King totaling 18 pts 11 rebs, followed by Robert Allen 10 pts 4 rebs.

WESLEY AND SADIE VERNON BATTLE TONIGHT FOR CENTRAL DIVISION SUPREMACY IN HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

The defending champs Wesley High School will put everything on the line tonight, when they face division rival Sadie Vernon in High School Basketball action. Both teams are still undefeated after three weeks of play, with Wesley boasting a league best four wins in as many outings, while Sadie Vernon is on pace with three wins and no losses.

Last week Monday saw Ladyville Technical High winning over St. John’s College, with Russell Staine scoring 24 pts for the victorious Ladyville team, followed by Warren Lewis with 9 pts. St. John’s College, who with the loss fell to (0-4), was led by Lyndon Arnold 15 pts and Marshall Nunez 7 pts.

On Tuesday, November 11, it was the defending champs Wesley High, behind Vince Young 16 pts and Steven Williams 15 pts, overcoming the late push by Nazarene High, to win by the final score of 56-49. Alejandro Baptist was the top scorer for Nazarene High, followed by Christopher Smith 13 pts.

On Wednesday night, Edward P. Yorke won by four over St. Michael’s College, 52-48. Their scoring was led by Charles Belisle 18 pts and John Diaz 16 pts. Meanwhile, for St. Michael’s College it was Evan Ferguson leading the way with 22 pts, followed by Raymond Allen 9 pts. Last week Thursday saw Gwen Liz squeezing past Ladyville Technical High by the score of 48-47, behind Andre Diego 22 pts and Sherwin Garcia 11 pts. For Ladyville Technical High it was Russell Staine leading the charge with 15 pts, complemented by teammate Eric Coleman 14 pts. In Friday night’s match-up, Sadie Vernon Technical continued their winning ways, this time humiliating one time powerhouse St. John’s College by the score of 71-35. Kaschief Thomas, who in the early going appears to be Hoops News’ leading candidate for High School basketball “Player of the Year”, had a game high 26 pts, followed by Kyle Domingo 18 pts. Meanwhile, for St. John’s it was Lyndon Arnold and Brandon Castillo scoring 11 and 10 pts, respectively.

In Saturday’s doubleheader action, Wesley won by seven over Gwen Liz by the score of 62-55, as Steven Smith had 18 pts, followed by Justin Roches 9 pts. Gwen Liz, who with the loss fell to (1-3), was led by Andre Diego 20 pts and Sherwin Garcia 19 pts. In the other game, Nazarene High won its first game of the season, winning over St. Michael’s College by the score of 60-59. Christopher Smith had 25 pts for Nazarene, while Evan Ferguson led St. Michael’s College with 29 pts.

GWEN LIZ FEMALE BASKETBALL PROGRAM SEEKING A THREE-PEAT

The Gwen Liz female basketball program just keeps running on all cylinders, as they continue their quest for their third straight Central Division as well as National Championship. They are currently in first place with four wins, as the tournament completes week three of play.

On Monday, November 10, Victoria Zelaya led Pallotti High over St. Catherine Academy by the score of 36-18, as she totaled 14 pts in the win. Annalisa Habet scored eight of SCA’s eighteen points in the loss. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, November 11, Wesley won by double figures margin over Nazarene High, the final score being 26-16. Anna Pinto once again led Wesley with 20 pts, while Margaret Flowers was the top scorer for Nazarene with 8 pts. On Wednesday, November 12, St. Michael’s College won convincingly over Edward P. Yorke by the final score of 13-3, behind Tishawn Sabal 6 pts. Gwen Liz played their arch rival Pallotti High on Thursday, November 13, in a battle for first place in the division; the results were similar to previous encounters, with Gwen Liz maintaining their dominance, winning by the score of 34-26. Sheryn Nunez had 17 pts for Gwen Liz, while Gianne Cayetano contributed 15 pts for Pallotti in the loss. Last week Friday saw St. Catherine Academy win their first game of the 2008 season, and just their second game since the year 2006. Kursha Pollard scored 10 pts for St. Catherine Academy, as they downed Sadie Vernon by the score of 21-16. Winning games obviously has become very hard for SCA, this one time female basketball powerhouse; but I am certain that if they remain persistent, I am pretty sure that it won’t be too long before this school is back to playing winning basketball.

In games played last Saturday, Gwen Liz won once again, this time over Wesley by the score of 33-16. Sheryn Nunez scored 15 pts for Gwen Liz, while Anna Pinto had a lackluster performance, managing only 8 pts for Wesley. In the other female game played, it was St. Michael’s College easily disposing of Nazarene High by the final score of 28-5, behind Shanice Mendoza 12 pts.

BELMOPAN ENERGY WIN 108-55 OVER EAGLES, WHILE BULLDOGS WIN IN 2-OT, 112-109 OVER TIGERSHARKS

Last week Thursday night, Belmopan Energy, behind Aubrey Lopez 28 pts 3 asst, and aided by Rhetton Belisle and Lloyd Leslie 14 pts each, won their second game of the season, blowing out their counterpart from the Capital, Belmopan Eagles, by the score of 108-55. The Eagles, who appear to be a team caught in the wrong league, have been taking a beating ever since the tournament got underway, losing games by an average of 48 pts per game, and there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Except for Mark Gentle and Arton Hanson, who had 16 pts and 14 pts, respectively, this team might as well pack it in and wait for the junior tournament.

Meanwhile, in the prime time match-up of the night, Belize Bank Bulldogs had to work double overtime to get past league leading San Pedro Tigersharks by the tight score of 112-109. The game was a seesaw battle, with both teams throwing some big punches at each other. The Tigersharks were able to draw first blood though, when they jumped out to an early 25-16 lead in quarter one. The Bulldogs answered in the second quarter, promptly outscoring them by the score of 28-22, to pull to within three points, 47-44, by the conclusion of the first half. However, in the third, the Tigersharks once again had their way with the Bulldogs, outscoring them 25-18, and in the process expanded their lead from three to ten pts, 72-62. The Bulldogs, however, answered the bell in the fourth quarter, as they went on an inspired 26-16 run, to tie the game at 88 apiece as regulation time expired. Darwin “Puppy” Leslie and teammate Kevin Domingo hit some big shots in the clutch, as the Bulldogs outscored the Tigersharks, 24-21, in the extra periods, to post the huge win. Darwin “Puppy” Leslie had 30 pts 16 rebs 5 asst 7 steals in the win, followed by Ty Bradley 20 pts 10 rebs 5 asst 5 steals, Kevin Domingo 15 pts 5 rebs and Rupert Brown 10 pts 6 asst. Meanwhile, for the Tigersharks it was Lester Cadle totaling 31 pts 6 rebs, followed by Kelvin Gillett with 22 pts 6 asst, Kirk Burgess 16 pts 25 rebs 9 asst, and Keith Acosta with 13 pts 12 rebs and 5 asst.

Last week Sunday, the games continued with the Tigersharks rebounding immediately, following their Thursday night loss, by soundly defeating Perk up Hawks by the score of 78-69. Ian Lennon led the Tigersharks in scoring with 20 pts, followed by Lester Cadle with 19 pts, and Kirk Burgess with 15 pts. Meanwhile, for the Hawks it was David Laing and Marcel Orosco scoring 17 pts and 13 pts, respectively. In the nightcap game, UB Black Jaguars won over Belmopan Energy by the score of 85-79, behind Travis Lennon 19 pts 9 rebs, Winston “Air Jun” Pratt 14 pts 7 rebs and Jorett Jones 13 pts 4 rebs. The Energy was led by Jason Daly 19 pts 7 asst and Christian Rodriguez 18 pts 7 rebs.
