All set for BCC/Publics U13 & U15 knockout finals this Saturday at Yabra Field

SportsAll set for BCC/Publics U13 & U15 knockout finals this Saturday at Yabra Field
It was all football fever for the youngsters at the Yabra Field on Saturday, August 9, as early morning showers did not dampen the spirits of anxious young footballers who came out to vie for a spot in the Knockout championships to be held this coming Saturday, August 16 at the same venue.

According to Peeloff, one youth told him that he couldn’t sleep the previous night, getting up twice and peering out his window, praying for morning to arrive quickly. And another, when it was suggested that the games might be called off due to bad weather, “You could see the tears well up in his eyes,” said Peeloff. “No way could we cancel the games!”

Six teams from each category, U-13 and U-15, would qualify to the Knockout Tournament, but since only four U-15 teams signed up, they all will make it to championship round this Saturday. Nevertheless, the youths had come to play; and that they did, with Yabra emerging the top seed, followed by Raiders in 2nd place.

Eight U-13 teams showed up – Jane Usher, Yabra, Ladyville Jaguars, Jah Love, Brown Bombers, Raiders, Blue Dragons, and Poor & Famous. And in the double elimination format employed, Jane Usher came out on top, with Raiders in 2nd, Ladyville Jaguars 3rd, and Yabra in 4th place. With the late start due to the weather, the last game wasn’t finished until after 8:00 p.m.

5th and 6th positions should be announced sometime this week. Reportedly, because of the shortage of U-15 teams, there has been a proposal to include all eight U-13 teams in the knockout finals this Saturday.

The knockout tournament, as well as the on-going BCC Youth Summer Camp at Yabra Field, was organized by Councillor Philip Willoughby, whose portfolio includes youth, sports and culture. The tournament is sponsored by Mr. Juan Carlos Dussan, owner of Publics Supermarket located at the Cor. West Canal and Church Streets in Belize City.
