BDF shock Bandits, 2-0; PLB playoff race steaming hot at Week 10

SportsBDF shock Bandits, 2-0; PLB playoff race steaming hot at Week 10

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Mar. 18, 2019– The race to the Top-4 Premier League of Belize (PLB) playoffs is suddenly hotter than it’s ever been, after BDF FC, who only two weeks ago were at the bottom of the standings, shocked defending champions, Bandits Sport with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of regulation, to grab the astounding 2-nil victory over the Bandits, who suffered their third loss of the season. And just like that, with only 4 weeks remaining in the PLB 2018-2019 Closing Season regular competition, it looks like a “brawl for it all,” as almost all teams, perhaps with the exception of Wagiya, have a realistic chance to make it among the top 4. (See Week 10 standings below.)

This has indeed been the most competitive PLB season ever, with last place Wagiya upsetting the Bandits a couple weeks ago, and former standings leader Verdes FC held to a 0-0 draw by struggling Freedom Fighters yesterday

Anybody can beat anybody on any given day in this PLB Closing Season. So, tighten your seatbelts, football fans, and brace yourselves for whatever our rising football stars have in store for us in the coming weeks.

In the only Saturday night game in Week 10, home standing Assassins Altitude FC dropped Wagiya Sporting Club, 4-1, at the M.A. Stadium in Independence. Altitude got a goal apiece from Miguel Cordero (35’ PK), Delone Torres (60’), Ronaldo Vergara (73’) and Andres Orozco (89’); while Highking Roberts (70’ PK) got the lone Wagiya goal.

On Sunday, at the Victor Sanchez Union Field in Punta Gorda, after drawing last week with San Pedro Pirates FC, home team Freedom Fighters FC pulled out a 0-0 draw against another top ranked team, Verdes FC. Meanwhile, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the hosts, Police United FC lost by a 2-1 margin to San Pedro Pirates FC.  Facundo Garnier (35’) and Devin Burgess (47’) scored for San Pedro, before Hasan Lucas (62’) cut the lead in half for Police United; but that’s how it ended, a 2-1 win for San Pedro, which now puts them at the top of the standings.  And here at the MCC Grounds in Belize City, with their playoff hopes looking dim, BDF FC nonetheless shocked the star studded visiting Bandits Sport, 2-0, with late “contra golpe” goals from Orland Trapp (84’) and Camilo Sanchez (90’).

BDF has reportedly also won a protest against Assassins Altitude due to crowd control problems at their Week 8 game in Independence, which was cut short with a 2-2 draw. If Altitude loses its appeal and BDF is awarded the win, the points picture would change, pushing BDF FC to fourth place with 14 pts, and dropping Altitude to fifth place with 12 pts.

With the Belize National “A” Team travelling this week for our March 23 CONCACAF Nations League match with Guyana, there will be no PLB games this coming weekend.  Week 11 games follow on the weekend of March 30-31, when the Pirates host Altitude, Bandits host Freedom Fighters, Verdes host BDF, and Wagiya host Police United.
