SportsBelize female softballers struggling at Pan American Women’s Championship in Puerto Rico

Reports received yesterday from delegation head Jude Lizama on the Belize Female Softball National Team’s performance at the VIII Pan American Women’s Championship in Puerto Rico indicated that our girls had difficulty in the early innings.

Jude reported:

“On Saturday, August 10, Belize lost, 5-0, to Venezuela. Belize collected 2 hits during this game, both singles, one by centre fielder Lydia Cacho and the other by designated player Lisa Jones. Venezuela scored their 5 runs on 12 hits, including a solo home run by catcher Milagros Lozada in the top of the 2nd inning, off Belize’s starter and loser Francine Hoare, who gave up all 5 runs. Hoare was relieved in the game by Kenreen Gillett who pitched 3 and 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.”

Belize lost a close one, 3-2, to Peru in our first game on Sunday.

“Belize scored 2 runs on 5 hits. The Belize offence was keyed by right fielder Barbara Cadle who collected 2 singles in 3 official at-bats. Belize’s other hits belonged to centre fielder Lydia Cacho, second base Sharette Vernon and Elaine Humes, who pinch hit for Joline Davis, collecting a run producing double in the 6th inning.

“Peru scored their 3 runs on 5 hits. The winning pitcher for Peru was Elizabeth Bautista and the losing pitcher for Belize was Kenreen Gillett, who has now appeared in 9 and 1/3 innings for Belize.”

In Belize’s second outing on Sunday, it was Puerto Rico – 8, Belize – 0.

“Belize collected 2 hits in the game, singles by centre fielder Marsha Will and third baseman Naricia Frazer. The losing pitcher for Belize was Lanisha Jones, who gave up all 8 runs, including a three-run homer to first baseman Charlise Castro, in the bottom of the 1st inning. Jones lasted only 1 and 1/3 innings, and was relieved by Francine Hoare who pitched the remaining 2 and 2/3 innings.”

According to Jude, Belize was scheduled to go up against the Dominican Republic today, Monday, August 12.
