Belize’s national champions, Hot Mama’s, played eight games between Friday and Sunday last, August 17-19, struggling to a 3-win 5-loss record and placing 4th in the international competition; but, on the bright side, Belize’s Kenreen Gillett claimed the distinction of the “winningest” pitcher, posting all three victories for the Belize team, one of them against Guatemala, in the 6th Annual Central American Senior Female Club Championship in Esteli, Nicaragua. Following are Belize’s game results:
Friday: Nicaragua 2 – Belize 0, LP Gertrude Vasquez; Belize 9 – Honduras 2, WP Kenreen Gillett; Guatemala 4 – Belize 2, LP Shandy Orellano.
Saturday: Salvador 14 – Belize 5, LP Gertrude Vasquez (relief, Shandy Orellano); Belize 6 – Guatemala 3, WP Kenreen Gillett; Salvador 6 – Belize 2, LP Shandy Orellano.
Sunday: Nicaragua 9 – Belize 0, LP Shandy Orellano; Belize 14 – Honduras 0, WP Kenreen Gillett.
Five countries were represented in the competition with Progresso Cemento of Guatemala capturing the title, after defeating Marte Lotin of El Salvador by a 4-1 score in the championship game. The host country, Nicaragua, placed 3rd, Belize 4th, and Honduras 5th.
Aside from receiving the Most Wins Award (her ERA was 1.62), Kenreen Gillett was also named to the Central American All Stars Team. Joining Kenreen on the All Stars Team were Belize’s Shadalee Ho and Lisa Jones, who shared the home run title (one HR each) with Janny Ramirez of Nicaragua.
