“Not everyone that cries Lord, Lord shall be saved.”

Last night was the balancing of the league’s positioning of the clubs to see who will make the breakaway and establish playoff berth. No Limits of Belize City have now lost two games in a row, and now playoff spots are open to every team.

It seems that the long rest worked in favor of the Heats. They came out a bit aggressive, with more chemistry, and started the game in a very competitive mode. Center Jude Budnah was more physical and had a very good game in the post. He was assisted by the newly acquired Jerome Palma to secure the victory by a score of 68-63 over No Limits.

The game was very tightly contested. Heats won the first quarter, but midway in the second quarter No Limits made a run with Shane Sebastian taking a breather on the bench and won the second quarter to go up by a point. At the end of the third quarter, No limits had a 3-point edge, but they came out a bit flat in the fourth, which is usually when they close out a game.

In the last three minutes, Andre Almendarez got his game together and took the Heats offence to the next level. Andre finished with the game high 24 points with 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Kevin Domingo had an off night but still led No Limits with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and a block.

The complaint from the No Limits bench was that even though the calls from the Mexican referees were consistent on both sides, they allowed the game to get too physical. CBA will look into this and take it seriously.

In the nightcap, Las Vegas Eagles took their winning streak to two when they defeated Taribo by a score of 80-62. In the first part of the game, Las Vegas Eagles were playing the best ball of their career, but could not shake off Taribo. Taribo got all the looks they needed to win the game. All we can say is that they had a bad night.

In the third quarter they got demoralized by a couple of dunks and defensive stops by the Eagles which put the game out of reach from them. Taribo definitely need Evan Salazar and Kalim Webster in the lineup every night if they want to be more competitive. Marlon Lawrence had the best night of his senior career by tallying 18 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. For Taribo, Juvencio “Tuck Tuck” Serrano had the game high 23 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

One thing I would like to emphasize is that when we watch the offensive statistics, it does not show anything about the player’s field-goal percentage.   Also, we seem to have been neglecting to mention the little things that defensive-minded players do to get the win. So starting next week, we will be putting the spotlight on the role players – the quiet unsung heroes that do the little things to get the big win.

This weekend CJC Stunnaz will be going up against Belize City’s No Limits, who need this win to secure their playoff spot, and in the second game, the young and talented Union Town Shattaz of Orange Walk will face off with the fundamentally sound Frontiers. So this Saturday, 27th January, starting 7:30 p.m., the Andres Campos Civic Center is the place to be for a night of positive entertainment. See you and God bless!
