GeneralCouple run over by vehicle on Christmas Eve; both killed

COTTON TREE, Cayo District, Wed, Dec. 27, 2017– Linda Carolina Hernandez, 33, and Oscar Rene Alvarado, 24, both of San Martin, Belmopan, were the unfortunate victims of a hit and run accident at about 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The couple was riding on a motorcycle on the George Price Highway, traveling from St. Matthews to Cotton Tree, when a vehicle crashed into them from the rear, ran them over, and sped away, leaving them to die on the highway.

Police who went to the scene of the accident, between Miles 42 and 43 on the highway, saw Hernandez lying on the road, writhing in pain. Rene Alvarado lay motionless on the highway. Police observed that he had suffered massive injuries to the head and body.

They were both rushed to the Western Regional Hospital, where Alvarado, the father of one child, was declared dead on arrival. Doctors tried to save the life of Hernandez, a mother of three children, but she died shortly after reaching the hospital.

Police investigating the accident found an extensively damaged Skygo motorcycle in the bushes, about 200 feet from where the bodies of Hernandez and Alvarado were found. They also found the damaged hood of a Volkswagen-type vehicle, near the motorcycle.

An investigation to find the callous driver who knocked down the couple and did not stop to render aid is ongoing. Anyone with information that can help the police to find the driver is urged to contact the nearest police station.
