Police have officially confirmed an incident involving the occupants of a vehicle and officials of the Customs Department.
It was reported last week that Custom officials had set chase after a vehicle that was transporting 20 sacks of onions, and which was traveling on the Northern Highway. Allegedly, the occupants failed to stop, and then they fired shots at the officers, damaging their vehicle.
Later, the officials found 20 sacks of onions in some bushes.
The occupant of the vehicle, an Isuzu Trooper, Ismael Camal, 24, of Corozal, has also made a report with regard to the incident.
llegedly, on August 9, Camal was driving someone else’s vehicle, which transported the onions from San Victor Village and was heading towards Xaibe Village, but when he reached San Narciso Village, Corozal District, a vehicle attempted to overtake him.
Camal said that he heard gunshots, and he accelerated, but the occupants of the vehicle continued firing.
Camal also told police that when he had reached Conception, he abandoned the vehicle in some bushes because he feared for his life.
We were unable to reach Custom officials, but we were told that the matter is being investigated.
