F.C. Belize and Nizhee Corozal win game 1 of BPFL semifinals

SportsF.C. Belize and Nizhee Corozal win game 1 of BPFL semifinals
The RF&G Insurance Cup semifinals got under way yesterday afternoon, and both home teams had to come from behind to register victories, as F.C. Belize and Nizhee Corozal grabbed game 1 of their home and away series with Ilagulei and Belize Defence Force, respectively.

At the Ricalde Stadium in Corozal, visiting Belize Defence Force got on the scorecard early on a Deon McCaulay strike at the 8th minute; but home standing Nizhee Corozal was unfazed, with Victor Morales knotting things up at the 24th minute, and Clifton West following at the 67th and Julio Valle at the 71st minute, for the 3-1 Nizhee victory.

Meanwhile, at the MCC Grounds in Belize City, things looked a lot more depressing for home squad F.C. Belize, who trailed 2-nil until late in the game, when they made a sensational comeback to win by a 3-2 margin. Lisbey Castillo struck for visiting Ilagulei at the 17th minute, and Elroy Kuylen added another at the 66th minute, for the 2-nil lead. But Shannon Flowers kept hope alive for F.C. Belize with his goal at the 82nd minute, and Jeromy “Jarro” James got back-to-back goals at the 92nd and 93rd minute (BPFL official times) to seize the 3-2 victory for still undefeated F.C. Belize.

(Amandala reporter notes there was a 4-minute game delay after Jarro’s first goal, which came at the 40th minute of the second half, and his second goal at the 48th minute, 4 minutes after resumption of play; but our times are unofficial. Ilagulei players and officials vehemently appealed to the referee for a foul call on Jarro’s first goal, where Ilagulei goalie Kevin Dawson had collided with his defender Everol Trapp, but referee Gerald Henry held his ground. Earlier in the game, at the 28th minute of the first half, Henry had first indicated a penalty for Ilagulei, when forward Roberto Bernadez tripped over two F.C. defenders in the eighteen, then reversed his decision after consulting with linesman Eugene Contreras. Today, Ilagulei’s manager Davis Marshall issued a strong letter of “discontent with the officiating” to BPFL Commissioner Maito Perdomo.)

4:00 p.m.   Belize Defence Force vs Nizhee Corozal
