Financial Controller at City Council reports “serious financial irregularities”

GeneralFinancial Controller at City Council reports “serious financial irregularities”
Arrests are expected as a result of a report to police by financial controller for the Belize City Council, Patrick Tillett, made sometime last week.

Tillett was installed at City Hall earlier this year in the wake of scandals affecting the previous Council. Mayor Zenaida Moya-Flowers is in her second term, and Tillett was empowered by amendments to the Belize City Council Act to investigate the finances of the Council and report as necessary.

According to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, new accounting regulations and correspondent penalties were also put in place with the amendment.

During a press conference held at the Radisson Fort George Hotel on Friday afternoon, July 10, on the situation at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the Prime Minister mentioned that Tillett had reported to his office as well as to the Ministry of Local Government of “serious financial irregularities” in the Council’s affairs. He did not elaborate on what irregularities were present or who was responsible for them.

However, the irregularities reported are apparently serious enough that the police have been called in. After reporting to the Ministry, Government officials there told him to make a complaint to the police.

The incident, according to Hon. Barrow, demonstrates the Government’s commitment to “prevent (corruption) as much as possible, and failing that to deal with it wherever it rears its ugly head.”
