Gene Guild, the “Japanese Bomber” passes

We received the shocking news this morning from Mose on the Krem WUB that 1970’s Belize football star Eugene Guild, now residing in New York, had died suddenly from a heart attack at 58. Gene’s elder brother, Emerson, had reportedly broken the sad news to Mose. Gene, a founding member and captain of the legendary Belize City back-to-back champions Berger 404 (1974-75, 1975-76), was in high spirits, and appeared in the best of health when he visited our sports desk along with Emerson in March of this year, so his death is really a shock.

Just yesterday morning, Tuesday, I had received a visit from another Berger 404 star, former goalkeeper Karl “Bunu Cal” Robateau, back home from New York on a short visit. Despite our years of intense rivalry in football – Charger vs Berger; and then Plaza vs Lake – there is nothing but love among us “old school” footballers, whose generation has somehow managed to keep life in perspective.

Gene took us completely by surprise. Another legend, and definite Amandala Football Hall of Fame member passes. Our sincere condolences to his family, especially brothers – Philip, Emerson, Steve, Leslie “Pinted” and Patrick, sisters, other relatives and friends. Rest in peace, brother Eugene Guild.

(Ed. Note: We did an extended interview with Gene on his visit back in 2008. Perhaps we can reprint that interview some time.)
