Headline“John Jay” killed in Dangriga game room

DANGRIGA, STANN CREEK, Mon. June 6, 2016–Popular karaoke singer and Sweet Pain Band guest singer, John Narcissus “John Jay” Rodriguez, Jr., 35, of Hopkins, the father of a little girl, died after he was shot in the left side of the head at about 11:00 Friday night in the Havana electronic game room on Havana Road in Dangriga Town while he and three others were playing electronic games.

The witnesses reported that at about 11:00 that night, three robbers entered to rob the game room and ordered the cashier to open her area so that they could enter to steal the money from the cash register, but she refused, and that was when one of the bandits, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, fired a shot at the men, who were playing on the machines.

The slug grazed the neck of Stanley Venai, 38, one of the men playing on the machines, but struck Rodriguez in the left side of the head. The three robbers then ran away empty handed.
Rodriguez fell to the floor and died almost immediately

Police said that when they went to the game room, at about 11:15 that same Friday night, they saw Rodriguez lying on the floor face down, in pools of his blood. He was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police began an investigation which led to a 16-year-old boy of the Backa-Town area of Dangriga, who has been detained, pending investigation, and they are seeking two men in connection with Rodriguez’s murder.

Many of the fans, friends, and relatives of Rodriguez expressed their anger, sorrow and sympathy on his Facebook page.

Captain Zenon Ciego of the Belize Defence Force said that he couldn’t believe it. John Jay Rodriguez was like his brother, he said. He also recalled that he had asked John Jay to help him sing a song that he, Zenon, would sing at his own wedding.

Claudius Cardinez wrote: “The Rodriguez clan has lost yet another life. John Narcisus Rodriguez, Jr. known to many as John-John or John Jay was the victim of a senseless shooting during what is said to be a robbery at an establishment in Dangriga. We remember him as a humble and honest person who worked very hard, and loved everyone. His amazing voice pierced through the toughest hearts and was a lullaby to many. His beautiful soul and spirit are not of this world. I ask his community of friends and fans to please pray for his brothers and sisters and for the extended family during this difficult time, Rest in peace, family.”

Funeral services celebrating the life of John Narcissus Rodriguez Jr. will be held at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Hopkins on Saturday morning, June 11.

Tania Rodriguez, John Jay’s sister, said that the wake for her brother will be held on Friday, June 10, at Charlton Rodriguez’s residence (Tania’s Guest House) and funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Hopkins.

The Rodriguez family wrote on Facebook that they are inviting everyone to Hopkins and to the family’s residence “as we come together to celebrate the life of John, Jr.” The Facebook post further stated, “Preferrably, [wear] colored clothing, no black! If any donations or contributions are to be made, we would like it to be centralized – either, take it to Charlton Rodriguez’s residence, or to any immediate family member, sisters or brothers of John-J. Anyone wanting to partake in activities for the wake or funeral services please get in contact with the siblings. Contact numbers for Charlton (610-3829 or 533-7058) or Kirk Rodriguez Sr (661-9218).”
