Mother of six needs financial help for thyroid surgery

GeneralMother of six needs financial help for thyroid surgery
Gloria Lorraine Humes, 45, a mother of six children, came to us today to plead for help. She needs to urgently undergo surgery to address the continuous growth of her thyroid gland; the results of the surgery will also indicate whether or not the growth has become cancerous.

The surgery, she told us, with a signed letter from her doctor, physician specialist, Daniel Godinez of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, will be conducted in neighboring Mexico.

The letter, written by Dr. Godinez, stated that Gloria has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism since 2008, which is a condition in which the thyroid gland makes an excessive amount of the thyroid hormone. In the letter Dr. Godinez stated, “Ms. Humes needs to undergo treatment, whether surgical treatment or radioactive iodine. Treatment will be done in Merida.”

The thyroid gland is located in the frontal part of the neck and is directly linked to the energy distribution cells. Since Gloria’s diagnosis, her thyroid gland has been increasing in size, which has now become a real issue in her day-to-day life.

She explained that a simple act of sleeping can become problematic for her, and she has to be repeatedly awakened by her children when she begins to have breathing difficulties.

She is currently on six prescription pills daily, which help her to cope, since her biggest issue is maintaining her nervous system functions. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include nervousness, fatigue, heat intolerance, goiter (which is the enlargement of the thyroid gland), weight loss, hair loss, weakness, high blood pressure, lack of menstrual periods in women, rapid irregular pulse, a rapid or forceful heart beat, and more.

Gloria told us that since her diagnosis, she has lost around 50 pounds or more, which has also brought her negative and speculative feedback from her community and peers. She told us that friends have also begun distancing themselves from her because of her “disease”.

Despite the additional unwelcomed public scrutiny, Gloria has been persistent in her search for aid in correcting this issue and getting more answers.

Gloria has always been a food vendor, a job that she tries to maintain in the face of all the obstacles. She says that she needs to find $5,000 for her operation. Through her own efforts, she has been able to save $1,000 for her traveling expenses.

To help Gloria, deposits can be made in her St. John’s Credit Union account #19708. She can also be contacted by cell numbers 665-7366, 607-3313, or 620-3588.
