PLB 2014-2015 Closing Season kicks off this weekend

SportsPLB 2014-2015 Closing Season kicks off this weekend

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Jan. 28, 2015–The Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2014-2015 Closing Season kicks off this weekend with 4 games scheduled. All 9 teams from last Opening Season are participating again in the Closing Season.

According to the established format, the berth for Belize’s club representative in the CONCACAF Champions League 2015 will be determined between the two winners of the Opening and Closing Seasons, depending on which of the two champions has the most combined regular season points over both Opening and Closing Seasons. Of course, if the Bandits should win again, that would settle it; but if another team is victorious in the Closing Season, the Champions League berth would be decided between that team and the Bandits, based on total regular seasons’ points.

As a reminder, below are the 2014-2015 Opening Season regular season final standings. Those are the points in the right hand column that will be counted along with the Closing Season regular season points total to decide the Champions League berth between Belmopan Bandits and the winner of the Closing Season.

The Closing Season kicks off on Saturday night with a repeat of the championship game showdown, as sub-champs Police United hosts 3-peat champs Belmopan Bandits at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium.

The big news is that finally the MCC will see a return to football action, as it has been confirmed on the PLB website that FC Belize will host BDF at the MCC Garden on Sunday.
In other news, following a sponsorship change, Toledo’s Freedom Fighters FC, which played last season as Paradise/Freedom Fighters, will this season play under the new name, King Energy/Freedom Fighters.

Week #1 schedule:

Saturday, January 31
7:30 p.m. – Police United vs Belmopan Bandits – Isidoro Beaton Stadium

Sunday, February 1
3:30 p.m. – FC Belize vs Belize Defence Force – MCC Grounds
3:30 p.m. – San Ignacio United vs Verdes FC – Norman Broaster Stadium
3:30 p.m. – Wagiya vs King Energy/Freedom Fighters – Carl Ramos Stadium

Just as at the start of the Opening Season, Placencia Texmar Assassins will be resting in Week #1.
