The 2009 Belize Rural Central Football Competition, organized by Mrs. Sharon Thurton and sponsored by Minister Michael Hutchinson, climaxed this afternoon at the Ladyville football field with an exciting final match between the previously undefeated Thurton F.C. and defending champion, Rebels.
Last Thursday night, Thurton FC had defeated Rebels, 3-1, in the first of the two-game finals series; but the tables were turned today, as Rebels pulled out the 3-nil victory, courtesy of two goals from Jack Dawson and one from Leon Jones, to claim the championship.
Thurton FC’s lady coach and sponsor, Mrs. Sharon Thurton, said after the game that it was a real heartbreaker, but she nonetheless plans to continue holding the football tournament in Ladyville, as she has been doing for the past seven years.
Coach Michael “Wataplat” Flowers says it is his fourth Ladyville 1st division championship with the Rebels.
