Sir,

It has been almost three complete years now since I have been monitoring this drain situation here on Baymen Avenue. The drainage area from in front of the Chinese Grocery Store continuing straight up passing the fruit shop. There is a section of the drain that is covered with a concrete culvert that needs to be removed in order to have the drain properly cleaned out so that the water is not blocked and can flow freely. This is the third time that I am appealing to the proper authorities asking if you could please do something about this very bad situation that is only getting worse every single day.

We call this street Baymen Avenue, but if you travel around to different places then you would see exactly what avenues and boulevards look like, and the way they are kept and maintained. It’s a big let down to the people who invented these names “avenues” and “boulevards.” As a resident of the immediate area, I find it very disturbing to have to look at every single day. I think this is a situation that needs to be addressed as soon as possible in order to avoid having to deal with some health problems in the near future.

We are in the process of erecting roundabouts in different locations of the city, but what we also need in the new areas that are just beginning to develop are wider streets that will be able to accommodate these roundabouts with a proper drainage system. All sidewalks should be of equal height. Also, for all those store owners who are building new buildings, they need to leave a space of at least no less than four feet in front with a decent sidewalk for their customers, instead of placing the building exactly on the street side. Business owners should also be held responsible for keeping in front of their businesses clean at all times. As for those business places that have an awning, they should not be not allowed to take it in as a part of their building and then let it be over the sidewalk.

Like anywhere else, for Belize development and expansion are a good thing. But let us do so and do it at a certain level. We need to set standards, rules and guidelines and make sure that every single individual adheres to them. If we are serious about accomplishing certain things and moving forward the proper way, then it can be done. There is nothing that is too small, too big or can’t be done.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you, or at least see something being done to rectify this problem. Let us make Belize that beautiful city that it is supposed to be for all of us to enjoy.
