Student, 7, knocked down in Teakettle

A child from the western village of Teakettle is currently hospitalized following a traffic accident which occurred in the Cayo District after 5:00 on Monday evening.

Amandala understands that Delmar Herrera, 32, of a Benque Viejo Road address, was driving his blue Hyundai Santa Fe SUV from Camalote en route to San Ignacio Town when, upon reaching Teakettle, he noticed a child on a bicycle riding across the road in front of him between Miles 52 and 53 on the George Price Highway.

In order to avoid hitting the child, Herrera reportedly swerved left; however, the child was still hit by the vehicle, which then crashed into a culvert as it came to a stop in a nearby drain.

The child, identified as Rory Datson, a 7-year-old student of Saint Edmond Campion Primary School in Teakettle, suffereded a large cut wound to the forehead and also to the back of the head, along with abrasions to the left hand and foot.

Datson was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital, where he remains hospitalized in a stable condition.

Belmopan police have since served a Notice of Intended Prosecution to Herrera.
