A visitor to the Jewel from New York was found dead, hanging by his neck in his hotel room, with a suicide note on a table near him.

Nicholas Theodore Pappas, 57, an American who was on a visit to San Pedro Town, was found with a rope tied around his neck attached to the railing of his hotel room in the island town.

Pappas was taken down and taken to the San Pedro Poly Clinic, where he was declared dead on arrival. He was then taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City and put in the morgue where he awaits a post-mortem to be conducted by Dr. Mario Estrada Bran tomorrow, Friday, to confirm his cause of death.

The incident occurred about 3:00 p.m. yesterday, Wednesday, at the Palms Resort in San Pedro.
Hotel manager Christopher Beaumont told police that he was on a routine check of his establishment when he checked room 33 and found the occupant, Pappas, hanging. When police arrived they saw Pappas with a yellow rope tied around his neck wrapped three times over a railing that was around fifteen feet high, and he was suspended about five feet off the floor in the room.

Police found his suicide note, which said that Pappas was broke, and that he was in a medical and financial crisis. He had withdrawn all his money in the U.S. to come to Belize, and he now had nothing left.

Police have since ruled the death as a suicide.

It is expected that the American Embassy in Belize will send him back to his country for burial.
