A new third party, the United Belize Party (UBP), has been formed, based mainly for now in the North.
The party’s chairman and sole candidate to date, Lucilo Teck, today told Amandala that the UBP “is committed to reconstruct the social and economic development of Belize,” and would focus on improving quality of life and education, and expanding political and economic opportunities for the masses.
Teck, a former candidate with the National Belizean Alliance (NBA) in 2008 and independent (in 2003), both times in Corozal Southwest, says he expects to reveal more candidates for the party, who will only contest the general elections, by nomination day, February 17.
The UBP, said Teck, represents the residents of the Corozal and Orange Walk districts and particularly the cane farmers, who have been neglected by the major parties.
Teck said he was unable to reach compromise with the Belize Unity Alliance candidate in his division, Roberto Campos, and so decided to go it alone.
Among other things, the UBP is committed to a multiparty electoral system, expanding the University of Belize to the north and providing scholarships to Belizeans.
