Uprising Stars are CYDP Peace Cup Championship

SportsUprising Stars are CYDP Peace Cup Championship

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Jan. 25, 2016–It was a real football extravaganza yesterday afternoon at the MCC Grounds, where football fans turned out in huge numbers, no doubt comforted by the heavy security provided by the Belize Police Department, and they were treated to two exciting football games to climax the CYDP Peace Cup Football Tournament 2015-2016.

In the third place opener, after regulation ended tied at 3-3, Kelly Street got the winning goal from Francis “Franco” Andrews in the second overtime period, to claim the 4-3 victory over Tut Bay. Goal scorers for Kelly Street were Stephen “Breds” Baizer, Wilfred Fisher and Francis Andrews (2); while for Tut Bay, Brian Martinez, Kevin “Motto” Alvarez and Delroy Flores got 1 apiece.

And in the championship final, it was scoreless in regulation, with the game winner for Uprising Stars coming from Jermaine Foster in the first overtime period for the 1-nil victory over, previously undefeated Kraal Road. Foster collected the rebound from a diving save by Kraal Road keeper Elias Hercules after a long blast by Uprising midfielder Jael Ottley. Foster’s left footed rocked, from well inside the eighteen on the left side, was unstoppable. (In the regular season, Uprising Stars was also undefeated in Group A, but had drawn one game, while Kraal Road had a perfect 7-0 record in Group B.)

Team trophies and individual awards were issued after the game, along with the prize checks of $5,000.00 to the champions, Uprising Stars; $3,000.00 to second place, Kraal Road; and $2,000.00 to third place, Kelly Street.

A more detailed report will be in our weekend issue.
