Headline11 murders in 10 days

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 5, 2016–Yesterday evening at about 6:45, police went to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and saw Johan Justin Cocom, 21, of an Adams Lane address in Belize City, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Police say that Cocom was riding his bicycle on Prince Street, contrary to the flow of traffic, when someone from a car parked about 30 feet away shot him.

Cocom, said police, succumbed to his injuries at about 7 o’clock that evening, making him the 11th murder victim in 10 days, beginning with the double murder on Thursday, April 28, that occurred on the San Francisco road on the George Price Highway, in which two Guatemalans were found shot to death.

Police say that they found Santos Ramon Gomez, 52, and Orlando Antonio Garcia Calletal, 37, on a farm road with gunshot wounds to the back of their heads. Police believe that it was a drug deal gone bad because a 25-kilogram scale was found beside the bodies.

On Friday, April 29, Gelion de Leon was found shot dead on a cattle farm in Camalote. A Dakota pickup was seen parked by the farm’s gate, but its significance has not yet been revealed by police.

Then police reported that on Saturday, April 30, a security guard, Andy Bustillo, 31, shot to death two women who worked at a beauty salon in Santa Elena, and then attempted suicide, but was not successful. The slain women are Miriam E. Mai, 39, owner of the business, and Daisy Carmita Miralda, 29. Police say that Mai had left Bustillos, and the shooting occurred when Bustillos went to the beauty salon with a gift to persuade Mai to enter back into their relationship and she refused. He then shot her and her employee.

On Sunday, May 1, in Camalote, Cayo District, Shawn Lopez, of Teakettle, and Akeem Thimbriel of Camalote, were fatally shot by an assailant in a grey 4-door pickup, which stopped beside them as they were walking to Lopez’s home.

Then on Tuesday, May 3, Lloyd Gerald Robateau, 31, was found shot to death at about 9:40 p.m. He was lying on the ground on Jackson Avenue in the Japan area of Ladyville. He had multiple gunshot wounds to the body, said police.

On Wednesday, May 4, police went to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and saw Troy Triston Cole, of a Curassow Street address in Belize City, with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He had been riding his bicycle on Gibnut Street, heading towards Curassow Street, when he was shot. He succumbed to his injuries at about 10:52 in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

The last murder on our list as of today, Thursday, May 5, is that of Johan Justin Cocom, with whom we began our countdown.
