BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Dec. 17, 2015–Early afternoon tremors were felt across Belize today, when a 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook an area near Tres Picos, Chiapas in southern Mexico, almost 300 miles west of Belize.
According to international media reports, computer models from the US Geological Service (USGS) estimated that 22.1 million people may have felt the earthquake, including 232,000 people who may have observed “moderate” shaking.
There were no reports of injuries or destruction from the earthquake, which reportedly occurred at a depth of 93.7 km at 1:49 p.m. Belize time.
Hours earlier, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was reported in Costa Rica.
