CrimeShooting in Sarteneja

Darwin Ortega, 29, a fisherman of Sarteneja, is presently being treated at the Corozal Hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg. His condition has since been declared as stable.

The man who police said shot him, Romaldo Catzim, 46, also a fisherman of Sarteneja, has been arrested and charged with the offenses of dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm, to wit: a firearm.

The incident occurred about 1:00 Friday morning in Sarteneja.

Catzim was taken to the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was remanded on the charges until January 13, next year.

Indalicio Ortega, 52, a fisherman of Sarteneja, told police that at about 1:00 Friday morning while in Sarteneja, he broke up a fistfight between his son, Darwin, and Romaldo Catzim, both residents of the village.

Ortega reported that while trying to calm his son, he heard Catzim say that he was going for his gun, and would return and shoot his son.

Shortly after, while taking his son home, he heard a shotgun blast and saw that his son had been hit. He turned around and saw Catzim with a shotgun. He immediately jumped onto Catzim and struggled with him to take away the gun.

Ortega was successful in taking away the gun from Catzim. People in the area who saw what happened called police, who responded to the reports and went to the scene of the shooting.

Police said that on their arrival they saw Darwin Ortega suffering from a gunshot wound to his right leg.

According to police, Catzim was taken to the Corozal Police Station, where he was arrested and charged with dangerous harm and use of a deadly means of harm. The shotgun was labeled as an exhibit, and will be presented as evidence in court when Catzim’s case is heard.
