Elmer Nah triple-murder case adjourned … again

GeneralElmer Nah triple-murder case adjourned … again

BELMOPAN, Tues. Aug. 22, 2023

Former police officer Elmer Nah appeared in the Magistrate Court in Belmopan on Tuesday, August 22, for proceedings related to his trial for the triple murder—of David, Jon, and Vivian Ramnarace—which he is accused of carrying out on New Year’s Eve. The case has been adjourned for a later date.

When Nah arrived in court on Tuesday, there was a crowd of people that included many family members of the victims waiting outside, and he professed his innocence by repeatedly yelling, “Enhance the video!”, and he continued to do so while he was being escorted to the police mobile which transported him back to the Belize Central Prison, where he will remain until his next court hearing.

With a repeat scenario in each court appearance so far, the court proceedings on Tuesday, like the ones which preceded it, were adjourned. The reason given is that a special prosecutor has been assigned, but he/she has not yet arrived in the country.

The Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, told a local television news station, “I think that the special prosecutor has been identified. I’m not sure if the contract has been signed, but the last I spoke to the minister, he said that the AG ministry was liaising with the special prosecutor in the signing of the contract, then he is going to come into the country, I think any time soon. He will be required to be called to the Bar in Belize, and then from there, he should take command of that case.”

While in court, Nah’s legal counsel gave notice that they intend to challenge the preliminary investigation which led to the charges that were brought against Nah, as they feel there isn’t enough evidence to justify a trial at the Supreme Court. However, family members of the victims are adamant that there is, and demand justice for their deceased loved ones.

Nah is set to return to court on September 27, where his attorney will put forward the challenges to that investigation.
