A week without any new COVID-19 cases in Belize

HighlightsA week without any new COVID-19 cases in Belize

BELIZE CITY, Sun. Apr. 19, 2020– On Monday, the Ministry of Health reported that four persons had been tested for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Belize. One person in the Cayo District tested positive, while three others from Belize City had tested positive for the deadly disease.

With three persons testing positive from Belize City, Ministry of Health officials had feared that there was going to be a community spread.

Since Monday, however, the Ministry of Health has not reported any new cases of COVID-19 in Belize.

When the Ministry of Health had feared a community outbreak in Belize City, it appealed to an estimated 100 persons who had attended a social function at which the person who was revealed to be the tenth confirmed case of COVID-19 (who died as a result of the virus) was in attendance, to come forward to be tested and questioned about their contacts. A number of tests were done, but all of them came back negative.

According to the Ministry of Health, Belize remains with 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Two persons have died from the virus.

All other persons who tested positive in Belize are currently recovering, and none of the other 16 cases are in intensive care.

The Ministry of Health reported that so far, it has tested 762 persons and 744 of those tested are not infected with the virus, while there are 18 positive cases.

None of the 18 positive cases of COVID-19 are from the two southern districts — Stann Creek and Toledo.

In the northern part of the country, there has been no case of COVID-19 in Orange Walk, while there were 4 positive tests from the Corozal District.

In the Cayo District, 6 persons tested positive, while in the Belize District, the number of positive tests was 8.

The Ministry of Health reported that they are currently investigating 74 cases.
