Ashley Smith, Customs officer, arraigned for theft

HeadlineAshley Smith, Customs officer, arraigned for theft

Ashley Smith is very lucky to be spending tonight at home because of the possibility of her being sent to prison after she was arraigned late this evening at Magistrate’s Court #8.

According to police, Smith (whose age was not provided in court) is the Customs officer who, between August 30, 2013, and September 26, 2013, allegedly stole $4,966, the property of the Customs Department. Police believe that Smith took the cash that was paid to her and replaced it with cheques written out in the same amounts, so that at the end of the day there would be no discrepancies with her account.

The matter was investigated after her superiors started seeing the cheques and realized that the company name that was printed on the cheques was not a company with which they had ever done business.

Smith pleaded not guilty to the charge and was offered bail of $10,000, which she was almost unable to meet. But at the last minute, her family was able to secure the bail for her, allowing her to leave the court and go home. She is to return to court on December 9, 2013.
