GeneralASP Michael Gutierrez ?retired? for disappearance of impounded vehicle

Our source said that the Security Services Commission held Gutierrez responsible for the disappearance of a vehicle that the Corozal police had impounded. The vehicle, described only as a van, was impounded last year because the documents for it were fraudulent and it was suspected to have been stolen from the United States, said our source.

In June, however, a prisoner who was charged with rape and murder escaped from police custody. The impounded van in question was then used in the search for the escaped prisoner. The van was used because the operation was covert, and it was believed that the van would not be linked to the police.

And according to our source, the officers had permission to use the impounded vehicle to search for the missing prisoner, but after the prisoner was recaptured, ASP Gutierrez began using it as his personal vehicle.

The van, which went missing sometime between June and August, was believed to have disappeared on a Sunday. Initially, it was not certain whether the vehicle was stolen from the Corozal police compound or from some location outside the compound.

Further police investigations showed that Gutierrez had left the station with the keys for the vehicle on the weekend that it went missing, and he was held responsible for its mysterious disappearance.

After the completion of the investigation, the Security Services Commission (SSC) convened a hearing, where they found ASP Gutierrez at fault, and retired him from the Police Department.

Our source said that almost less than one week after the van disappeared, United States officials confirmed that it was indeed stolen from the US.

ASP Gutierrez served on the police force for more than 25 years.
