His common-law-wife, Beverly Brown Simpson, 34, who appeared in court beside him, was charged with 6 counts of abetment to rape. The incidents are alleged to have occurred at Simpson?s house, located on Jane Usher Boulevard, on April 28, May 7, May 17, May 19, May 20 and May 21.
It is alleged that at the time, Simpson was babysitting the child, whose mother works at a restaurant, and who said she trusted Simpson.
The prosecutor objected to bail for both defendants on the grounds of the prevalence of the offense, and that the charges against Gillett are in relation to the same complainant, a case that was brought to the #6 Court on Monday, June 5.
The magistrate, Sharon Frazer, upheld the prosecutor?s objection and remanded Gillett and Simpson to prison until June 16.
Gillett lifted his shirt and showed Magistrate Frazer the bruises on his upper left arm and back. He said the constable beat him until the mop broke and that he would not have stopped if another police officer had not told him to stop.
Gillett also told Magistrate Frazer that the police constable refused to take him to the hospital, even though a police inspector instructed him to do so. Gillett said he was still in pain.
Magistrate Frazer ordered that Gillett be taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital before he is taken back to prison.
Gillett and Simpson are both sanitation workers employed by SEL. They have been living together since January, 2006. Gillett is the father of two children, a boy and a girl, but Simpson is not their mother.
Simpson is the mother of a 13-year- old daughter and a 10-year-old son, but the children are not in her care.
In court, Simpson admitted that the child was left in her care on a number of occasions. The child?s mother, who is a 25-year-old single parent who also has a son 4 years old, told Amandala that she has known Simpson for a number of years and she trusted her with her children, because she was a mother, too.
She said she was not aware of the incidents until Saturday, June 3, when her daughter ran from Simpson?s house, stopped a police vehicle that was in the area and told them that Gillett had fondled her. Before he fondled her, said the child, Gillett put on a ski mask and took out a big knife, telling her that if she told the police anything, he would slit her throat.
Police arrested Gillett and charged him with aggravated assault of an indecent nature.
The charges of rape and carnal knowledge were brought against Gillett after the child was examined by a doctor on Sunday, June 4. He confirmed that the child was carnally known.
On the weekend of April 28, before Labour Day, May 1, the mother said she left her children with Simpson and went out. Later, her daughter told her that on that night Gillett taped her mouth with duct tape and Simpson held her down so that Gillett could rape her.
She said that her daughter?s brother, after being chased from the house, returned and peeped through a curtain and saw Gillett raping his sister.
In connection with the charge of aggravated assault, Gillett is to return to court on July 5.
