BELIZE CITY, Wed. June 30, 2021– On Wednesday, June 30, the Ministry of Health and Wellness unveiled its new vaccination outreach program, which will be carried out under the banner of the public message, “Before you relax, get vax!” The aim is to remind the Belizean public that vaccination remains the key to saving lives and restoring the economy.
The Health Ministry, through the program, will be making an effort to increase the public’s knowledge about the vaccination process and to debunk “myths” about vaccines in order to convince a larger portion of the population to get vaccinated, since the country will only reach the threshold necessary for herd immunity if at least 70% of the population is vaccinated. Those who have only received one dose of the vaccine are also being encouraged to get their second jab.

The Health Ministry is also assuring the public that it has an adequate supply of vaccines to continue the vaccination process. Recently, in addition to receiving 10,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, and another allocation of vaccines from the COVAX facility, the Government of Belize also received 100,000 AstraZeneca jabs through a donation from the Government of Mexico. The Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Michel Chebat, also said that the ministry is awaiting more than 200,000 vaccines to be deployed through COVAX and the African Medical Supplies.

In light of all this, Minister Chebat has said, “July is the month for everyone to get vaccinated.” All groups are now eligible to receive vaccines countrywide from any public health facility. He explained that all persons over 18 years of age and persons who have been vaccinated less than 8 weeks ago qualify for a vaccine. Dr. Deysi Mendez, the CEO within the Health Ministry, also announced a giveaway exclusively for persons vaccinated in the month of July. Those persons may qualify for a “staycation”, courtesy of BTB, or become a winner of a national raffle courtesy of BTL.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness will also be making vaccines more accessible for rural communities. Mendez noted that testing and vaccinations remain free. She concluded by saying, “Do your part by getting fully vaccinated. Vaccines are safe and effective.”
