NEW YORK, Sat. Sept. 25, 2021– Last week, a delegation from the Government of Belize was present at the United Nations for the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly. On this occasion, Belize and the West African nation of Sierra Leone officially established diplomatic relations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belize made the announcement on September 23 in a release which stated, “A joint Communique formalizing diplomatic ties between both countries was signed today in New York within the margins of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.”

Sierra Leone is a former British colony that gained its independence in 1961. The official language is English, but local dialects such as Temne, Krio, and Mende are also spoken.
