BELIZE CITY, Mon. May 29, 2023

In the early hours of Saturday, May 27, hundreds gathered for the annual Cancer Walk 2023, organized by the Belize Cancer Society (BCS).

There was a significant turnout at the march, which commenced at the Marion Jones Sports Complex. Participants present at the walk were encouraged to wear T-shirts communicating a message of hope and support for cancer patients. Those participating in the simultaneous live chat were encouraged to engage by asking questions and keeping the conversation about cancer awareness flowing.

This year’s theme, “Closing the Cancer Care Gap with Hope,” was brought to life as survivors, caregivers, advocates, and supporters walked together, expressing their solidarity and commitment to overcoming cancer.

Some participating organizations included the Red Cross, the Belize Tourism Board, Belize Ship Handlers, etc.

The mission was clear: bridge the knowledge divide about cancer care, and inspire the fight against this devastating disease with hope.

The day commenced at 4:45 a.m. with participants assembling, followed by an invigorating warm-up at 5:15 a.m.

The highlight of the day was the symbolic ribbon-cutting at 5:45 a.m., which marked the formal start of the event. As the clock struck 6:00 a.m., participants began their journey — following a route that extended from the Marion Jones Sports Complex to the Northern Shops, then continued past Westrac, the Muslim Community Primary School, and the Government House of Belize, then passing Fort Street Belize Sign, and finally, ending at the Digi Park.

The Cancer Walk is a cornerstone event of the BCS, which serves as a crucial information center for the people of Belize. Through its various initiatives and events, the BCS provides Belizeans with access to essential cancer care information, resources, and support.

The society’s relentless efforts extend beyond the fight against cancer, with a strong emphasis on creating an informed community capable of proactive health management.

The Cancer Walk 2023 has once again proven the strength of community spirit and the power of hope. It represents not only a determined stance against cancer but also a decisive step toward closing the cancer care gap.
