SportsBELIZE U-12 BASKETBALL SELECTION FACES BELIZE BANK U-14 BULLDOGS SUNDAY AT THE CITY CENTER AT 1 PM
On Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., Belize’s U-12 National Basketball Selection will play the U-14 arm of the Belize Bank Bulldogs as a prelude to game two of the 2008 Over-35 Basketball Championship. This will be the U-12 National team’s first game for this year, following their impressive performance late last year in Guatemala City, in which they won 3 of 5 games played. The team is headed by Head Coaches Brads Neal and Jimmy Smith, and the players include Kareem Smith, Isanny Pook, Frederick Williams, Sydney Bradley, Jr., Vicente Avila, Jovan Usher, Andrew Vasquez, Rodrick Williams, Christon Flores, Corliss McKenzie, Jordan Usher and Roman Alvarez. On the other end, the U-14 Belize Bank Bulldogs Club will be making their local debut, following an unsuccessful showing in Cancun, Mexico in late December. The players include Kijana Moody, Tariq Gabb, Evan Garnett, Devin Bladen, Normandi Caliz, Kyle Middleton, Jonathan Gideon, Dedric Ramclam, Andre Cleland, Wincy Lopez, Brandon Harris and Justin Bailey. They are being coached by Roscoe Rhys and Dion Ramclam. The game promises to be an exciting one, and from the desk we urge all basketball fans to come out and support the youngsters.

On another note, we have been made to understand that the Bulldogs will be holding tryouts this coming Saturday at 9 a.m. at the SJC gymnasium for youngsters under 17 years who are interested in becoming members of its U-17 club.

2009 BECOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TO COMMENCE ON FEBRUARY 6, 2009

The San Ignacio and Santa Elena Basketball Association 2009 BECOL Basketball Championship is slated to begin on Friday, February 6, at 6 p.m. at the Falcon Field in San Ignacio Town. The tournament, according to the organizers, will feature four categories, starting with the U-18 category, U-21, O-35 and Senior. Last year’s winner in the senior tournament was Christ for Life, who won over Belize Bank Diamonds 2 games to 1 in their best-of-three series. In the U-17 category, it was LA Tigers winning over Sacred Heart College, and Belmopan Bandits over Benque Rockers in the Over-35 category.

OLD CEMETERY ONE VICTORY AWAY FROM FIRST OVER-35 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Ian “AC” Augustine 16 pts 6 rebs 2 asst 4 steals along with Calvin “Big T” Tench 13 pts 2 rebs were the key contributors in Old Cemetery’s game one big 72-61 victory over Classic Purex in the 2008 Over-35 Basketball Championship played last Sunday at the City Center. Classic Purex, who entered the game with the psychological edge, having defeated Old Cemetery in the regular season, 79-63, was able to start out quickly in first quarter play; however was unable to sustain it, and by the time the ending of the first quarter came around the game was tied 21-21, following a buzzer beater made by Richard “House” Garbutt. In the second quarter, Classic Purex, obviously rattled by the energy of Old Cemetery, could only manage 10 points in the quarter, and as a result found themselves down at the half, 42-31. The third quarter was a struggle for both teams, as their combined output totaled 23 pts, with Old Cemetery having the edge, 14 to 9. In fourth quarter play, despite a late run by Classic Purex, pulling to within six points of Old Cemetery, it was a case of too little too late, as they were unable to muster the required offensive needed to guarantee the win, and as a result fell in game one by the score of 72-61. Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) Secretary General Julian Murillo was the top gun for Classic Purex, totaling 19 pts on 3 of 3 shooting from behind the three-point arch, to go along with 4 rebs and 1 block. He was aided by play from teammate Greg Williams, who totaled 16 pts 3 asst in the loss.

Game two of the series will be played on Sunday, which will be preceded by a mini-basketball match-up scheduled to be played at 1 p.m. between Belize U-12 National Selection and the Belize Bank U-14 Basketball Club. This game will be followed by the Over-35 consolation game between Old Technical and Albert’s.
