Belmopan community grocer murdered

HeadlineBelmopan community grocer murdered

BELMOPAN, Fri. Jan. 29, 2021– Late Friday afternoon, 53-year-old Belmopan resident Abel Bardalez was murdered during a robbery that took place at his establishment. Reports from police are that the community grocer was shot by an unknown assailant of dark complexion who entered his store and proceeded to rob the business, as well as two delivery men who were in the store.

Video footage of the incident shows a lone gunman, wearing a surgical mask, entering the business and looking around before confronting the three other men. He seemed to have uttered some words and a struggle ensued, and it was at that point that the first shot was fired, hitting Bardalez.

A wounded Bardalez then proceeded to chase the fleeing gunman outside the building, but was shot a second time, before the gunman ran off in the next direction. The assailant, seen dressed in a blue sweater, returned to the shop before the footage ended.

Police are currently seeking this suspect, who reportedly also robbed the delivery men who were doing business at the establishment. Head of National CIB, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, has said that the person in question is not a known suspect and has not been identified as yet.

According to Bardalez’ son, his father died as a hero. According to him, his father was defending his sister, who was also in the shop at the time, and also the two men from the Big-H juice company. He said that his father has always been a defender of others and a hard worker. He noted that this is the first robbery that has ever taken place at the business, since his father was known and respected as a father-figure in the community.
