Police have ruled it a suicide

BENQUE VIEJO DEL CARMEN, Cayo District, Thurs. Aug. 2, 2018– Reports out of Benque Viejo del Carmen are indicating that the body of well-known businessman Carlos Chang, age unknown, was found in his home on Tuesday with a single bullet wound to the head. Chang was last seen on Sunday, and police say he killed himself.

Chang, who is originally from Guatemala, but who has been living in Belize for many years, was with his wife and family, who all currently live in Guatemala, up until Friday. A neighbor said he saw Chang go into his house at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. That was the last time anyone reported seeing him, until his body was found.

On Monday, a friend of Chang visited his house but was unable to contact him. The friend visited him again on Tuesday evening, and still could not reach him. His friend then decided to contact the police, because Chang had also not gone to work at the business he operates at the Benque Free Zone.

When the police arrived, they pried open the front door and discovered Chang’s body with the gunshot wound in his head.

At first, the investigators suspected foul play, especially since there were rumors that a Hispanic woman visited Chang on Sunday, but the results of the postmortem exam on Chang’s body, which was conducted on the scene, indicated that it was a suicide.

Chang, who is a cousin of the president of the Senate, Lee Mark Chang, has businesses in Benque and Guatemala, and has dual citizenship for both countries. He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and two sons, all of whom he was supposed to visit tomorrow, Friday.
