Horizon Academy hosts The Kingdom of Reading Book Fair

Horizon Academy is this weekend hosting its fourth annual book fair, called “The Kingdom of Reading Book Fair: Where Books Rule.”

Principal Diane Maheia said the school fundraiser is being held to make more reading choices available to children, because of the importance of reading.

“We have children selected as star readers who will do readings at intervals during the fair,” the principal said.

The fair is usually held mid-December, but it is being held earlier this year. It is scheduled to be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, November 16 and 17, at the ITVET Campus on Freetown Road, Belize City.

“Horizon Academy has worked with Scholastic publishers to make available here in Belize hundreds of books for children of all ages. Books of many different genres will be on sale, from board books and books for beginning readers to chapter books and graphic novels for older students, in classics and timeless favorites, as well as popular new series,” Maheia said.

She previewed the 39 Clues books, which she said “…is a series about two orphans who are given a choice between accepting 5 million dollars or going on a quest for 39 clues that will make them become powerful people in the world.”

There will also be science-oriented books, as well as biographies. The publishers have also included traditional fairytales with a twist, such as Three Little Pigs and The Somewhat Bad Wolf. Other interesting books are Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears and Bring the Rain to Kapiti Plain.

Bilingual Spanish books, reading comprehension books and math skills texts catering to students from Standard I to IV will also be available at the fair.

“Children’s Day is next week. It’s a good way to buy a present for your favorite children,” Maheia said, noting that books can be meaningful gifts that last a lifetime.

Usually books range on average between 8 and 10 dollars, but the bigger books and hardcover books cost a little more.

There is no entrance fee to attend the book fair.
