Borders opened for tourists only

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 20, 2021– Today Cabinet released an update on matters that were discussed and decisions that were made during its regular session meeting, which took place on May 18, 2021. In that press release, the public was informed that the country’s land and sea borders would be reopened — but only foreign tourists (those visiting the country for recreational purposes) will be allowed entry into the country at these border points.

This reopening will officially take place at the end of this month, on May 31 — a little over a week from now.

The entry points that will be reopened are the Santa Elena Northern Border, the Benque Viejo del Carmen Western Border, and the San Pedro and Punta Gorda borders.

It is to be noted as well that only tourists who are pre-booked at gold standard certified accommodations will be allowed entry into Belize.

During an interview last week, the Prime Minister, Hon. John Briceño, said that his government would only reopen borders if Covid-19 tests could be administered to those persons entering the country — in a manner similar to what is currently done at the PGIA. While there is no indication whether these measures were put in place, the border reopening is set to take place in less than two weeks.
