LIBERTAD, Corozal District, Wed. June 17, 2020– Steven Torres, a 10-year-old Libertad student, was knocked down by a butane gas truck this morning while he was riding his bicycle, in the course of doing an errand for his family. As a result, he suffered massive head injuries and died immediately after being knocked down.

Yuri Arnold Lucas, 39, the driver of the truck, who is a resident of San Joaquin, Corozal District, told police that he saw the little boy riding his bicycle in front of the truck, and he pulled to the left side of the road to overtake the boy, but the boy also pulled to the left side of the road to avoid a pool of water on the roadside, and that was when the truck hit him.

People in the area who saw the accident called his family, who rushed to the scene, where they saw him lying on the road. The boy’s body was then taken to the morgue.

Police detained Lucas and have issued a Notice of Intended Prosecution to him.

CTV3 News Belize said that Torres was a Standard 3 student at the Libertad Methodist School .
