British DFID officials visit Belize January 10-16

InternationalBritish DFID officials visit Belize January 10-16
A team of officials from the United Kingdom office of the Department for International Development (DFID) will be making an official visit to the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre in Belmopan from January 10-16.

The DFID team, led by Mr. Richard Beales, Senior Natural Resources and Environment Adviser in DFID’s Overseas Territories Department, will hold discussions with the Executive Director of the Centre, Dr. Kenrick Leslie, and his technical team to finalize a proposal aimed at offering the British Overseas Territories of Montserrat, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, and Anguilla the opportunity to participate in regional climate change capacity building activities now being executed in CARICOM countries under the management of the Climate Change Centre.

The DFID initiative is expected to provide support for the participation of the Overseas Territories in activities under the umbrella of the ongoing regional Mainstreaming of Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) Project being implemented in CARICOM countries. It comes at a time when global concern about climate change and its likely adverse impacts is heightened by the accumulation of scientific evidence that the observed trend of global warming can be attributed to our present lifestyle which is highly dependent on the use of fossil fuels.

The British government has, as a result, placed a high priority on addressing the issues not only of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also of promoting the development and implementation of climate change adaptation strategies, particularly in vulnerable small island states such as the British Overseas Territories.

During their brief visit the DFID team will be meeting with the British High Commissioner to Belize and will also meet with the local press.
