BTL Nets suspend Keith Acosta indefinitely

SportsBTL Nets suspend Keith Acosta indefinitely

Rumors had been floating around in the Belizean basketball world since it was announced that fans would be getting a chance to see semi-pro basketball this year, that Keith Acosta was being courted by other teams.

One team that has often been mentioned when the rumors float up, is the Kruzazz. Which brings us to where we are today, with Superman being suspended indefinitely by his team for his decision to go to Mexico with the Kruzazz.

In an exclusive interview with Amandala, Acosta told us that his trip to Ciudad Del Carmen has been a yearly event that he has participated in for years. Besides, his decision in crossing the northern border was made before it was official that there was going to be a 2004 basketball season.

?I was being a gentleman by not going back on my word. I had made a commitment to the organizers,? Acosta said. So to suddenly learn that he had been suspended came as a surprise to him.

Acosta told us that he didn?t go across into Campeche to represent as a Kruzazz player, but went in to represent Belize. When the team were introduced, they weren?t introduced as Kruzazz but as ?Team Belize.?

The Mexicans could have cared less who the Kruzazz are. What they were concerned with is getting good competition and that came in the form of a Belizean team that consisted of majority Kruzazz players. Kruzazz assistant coach Matthew Smiling, in a halftime interview with KREM Sports last Friday night, said he had planned this trip before the start of the 2004 BBA Summer Heat Tournament.

When we asked Keith what the suspension would do to his relationship with his team and his game, he told us, ?Personally, I love the game. I?ve been playing with passion ever since I started playing and for them to sanction me, it kinda hits the spot, and I don?t know where it goes from here, but I definitely like to play and want to play. I think while I can play, I would love to play and I don?t want that to be taken away from me in any kinda way. I just want to play and if need be, if a decision needs to be made, then it has to be made.?

Acosta in the past five years has proved that he has game. He was regular season MVP four out of the five years and even though he doesn?t have a championship ring to prove it, he won championships with the Raiders in 1994, 1995, and 1996.

BTL Nets, since the season began, have yet to lose a game and are currently the team to beat.

Acosta says one thing he wants to clear up in all this, is his loyalty. ?My loyalty has been questioned, and I?d like for people to toss that out the window. For the past few years they?ve seen me play the game and know that when I step on the court, I give it my all. So for all those who say that I wanna play here and wanna play there, that?s not true, I am a BTL player, I?ve always been a BTL player and until otherwise, that?s not changing. I am for the team.?

We did talk to BTL Nets? team manager, Charles Ellis, who confirmed that Keith Acosta has been suspended for an indefinite period, for what he said was ?disrespect? of the team, coaches and management.

Ellis emphatically stated: ?Keith Acosta is not for sale or trade.? Ellis said that we can expect to see Keith Acosta suiting up for the BTL Nets before the end of the season.
