Belize Times guilty … again

Friday, December 7, was vindication day for Commandant Robert Garcia and Major John Flowers, and $30,000 worth of consolation too, each, (plus costs of court to the tune of $9,000 each) as Justice Samuel Awich ruled that an editorial appearing in the Belize Times of December 25, 2005, had wrongly impugned their characters.

After Felix funeral, Yabra crowd maul down hated fence!

Late this evening grieving Port Loyolans returning from the funeral of young Feron Felix, 16, who was cruelly murdered on Friday night, November 30, vented their anguish upon a cement fence they believe has been a plague on their community for over a decade. The killers of Feron Felix, it is believed, hid behind the cement fence and waited for their opportunity to murder the young man.

Master of ceremonies at the latest UEF (UBAD Education Foundation) and KREM Radio sponsored symposium, Senator Godwin Hulse, set the tone early. We were there to find out about “wi” oil! A capacity crowd turned out at the Bishop Sylvester Memorial Center on Wednesday night to hear Dr. Gilbert Canton, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Belize Natural Energy (BNE), Mr. Jim Cavanaugh, an oil expert resident in Belize since 1996, Dr. Joseph Iyo, a historian from oil rich Nigeria, and the Director of Petroleum in Belize, Mr. Andre Cho, speak on the present and future of oil in Belize.

Puga’s Saturday night party!

In the streets of Belize City, no one was shocked. We’ve been hearing about this kind of prison-related hanky panky for months and months. But around 9:45 on Saturday night, November 24, police at the checkpoint at Mile 4 on the Western Highway were astonished to find when they stopped a vehicle for a routine check that the driver was a high profile prisoner, Taejon Bennett, 27, who is on remand for the Mother’s Day murders of the Brannon brothers, Phillip and Kevin Brannon, ages 22 and 29 respectively, which occurred early Sunday morning, May 14, 2006.

Minutes after murder, tries to hang himself …

A marital relationship that had been going on for about 4 years came to a violent and tragic end around 12:30 this afternoon when the estranged husband, security guard Glenford “Bucket” Bermudez, 33, allegedly shot his wife, Racquel Bermudez nee Requeña, 40, once in her head, killing her instantly.

1 body – 6 ??????

On Saturday painful closure came for Mrs. Deborah Swift. She had waited hopefully and prayerfully for almost a week after the disappearance of her husband, Magistrate Richard Swift, who had been declared missing at sea with six other men since last Sunday, November 4. Godfrey bolts from Bacalar Chico heat!

Tourism Minister Godfrey Smith bolted from the Bacalar Chico de-reservation heat today in an interview with Channel Seven’s Jules Vasquez. The ruling PUP’s Deputy Leader (one of three), Hon. Smith spoke as follows: “Whatever discussion occurred at Cabinet level, was a cursory discussion; it was not an agenda item. It was a very broad, sketchy discussion. To the best of my understanding, there was no decision made in relation to that. I have to say, in all sincerity, that certainly speaking for myself, but I suspect no Cabinet member realized that that was being spoken of, Bacalar Chico, was part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In my view, it would be foolhardy to even contemplate tampering with a UNESCO Heritage Site. I am fairly certain that Cabinet will no longer be interested in looking at that.”

“Worthless and wicked!”

Outraged Supreme Court Justice Lucas to cop witnesses: You are worthless and wicked; you take my court for a joke; you should be investigated…

Oil for peanuts!!

Public pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Said Musa to cancel the two controversial oil contracts for Blocks 15 and 16 in the Mountain Pine Ridge. The contracts have been given to two Belizean companies, ZMT, and BCH, registered to Antonio Zabaneh (husband of House Speaker Elizabeth Zabaneh) and Mike Dunker, both businessmen of Independence Village.
