In the second game of the night, expansion teams Complex Bombers and Diamond Int?l made their debut, and despite the fact that only one team could walk away with the win, both teams were impressive and both of them will certainly make a lot of noise in Division A.

Diamond Int?l were able to assert themselves very early in the game as they took an early 4-0 lead with Mark Brooks hitting two jumpers in a row and Sheldon Williams showing off his leaping ability with a spectacular crowd pleasing breakaway dunk. With this type of play Diamond Int?l were able to maintain a comfortable lead throughout most of the first half.

Myron Flowers of Aero Despatch/Customs has been named the IBL Player of the Week. Myron was instrumental in his team?s victory over Maya Airways last Sunday by the score of 49-34. He scored a season high 31 points and at the same time pulled 8 rebounds and had 2 steals. The league extends congratulations to Myron and wishes him and his team all the success for the remainder of the 2005 season.

Santino?s Non-Elite race of Saturday, April 23Classic

This race, from Georgie August to Burrell Boom and back for a total of 45 miles, started at 6:30 a.m., and fielded 24 male riders, and 2 females, who are allowed to compete in this category. It did indeed start with a boom as George Abraham, riding for Santino?s, and Gilroy Robinson, riding for M & M Engineering, broke away at the gun, never to be caught again. They ended up sharing the two station prizes on the road, and came in first and second, respectively, winning a trophy along with 20 and 16 points towards ?Cyclist of the Year? for this category.

On Monday night in interoffice basketball, the veteran club of YEC/NDFB led by Carlton Young, Emory Bennett and Charles Ellis, caught the younger and better conditioned San Cas ?Seven Seas? totally by surprise and embarrassed them by the score of 41-29. The game was decided in the first half as YEC/NDFB got off to an early start with Emory Bennett hitting for 9 first half points. His team took a substantial lead by the score of 26-14.

The 10th Annual Labor Day Classic

The Cycling Association announced that there will be a race course format change to this year?s edition of the Labor Day Classic. The new route is scheduled to commence in Corozal Town, Sunday, 1 May, finishing at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.

This distance is approximately 85 miles long, shaving off some twenty miles from last year?s encounter. The race was first organized by the Orange Walk Workers? Union in 1996 to highlight their union?s activities.

Saturday cycle races

With one week to go to the Labor Day Classic, it seems that there are some reservations to hold the event on the day. There are concerns over the allotted period for the National Agricultural Show and the volume of traffic on the highways, the possibility of the law enforcement agencies being short-handed and, of course, the state of the economy where raising funds for the race is concerned. It has become customary for the Committee to struggle from race to race during the season.

Hoops News

Sparked by their best player?s absence (Enid Dakers), and knowing fully well that they would need a full team effort, ?Sparks? persevered and managed to pull out a win against Maria Chang 2ndEdition last Sunday by the score of 39-31. Sparks got off to an early first half lead 21-14 as their balanced attack of Lacey Rosales 14 points, Rochelle Hemsley 9 points and Lisa Sanchez 13 rebounds posed major problems for Shelmadine Cacho, who despite a double double of 16 points 11 rebounds, did not get the necessary support she needed from her teammates to register the win. With this loss Cacho?s team now has a (1-2) record and it does not get easier as they now face Maria Chang ?Eagles? this coming Friday at the City Center.

It wasn?t as crowded as one would expect, but Castleton Race Track in beautiful Burrell Boom was the venue of some of the most exciting horseracing. It was only a 6-race card, but we are certain that everyone got their money?s worth.

The first race of the day saw the G Class 3 furlong horses do battle. ?Maya? from Lennon Stables came up with a back-to-back victory in a time of 42.3 seconds over ?Miracle? from Gabourel Stables. Third was Guy?s ?Trick Again?, and fourth was ?Sweet Destiny? from Espat?s Stables.

According to reliable reports received here at the desk, we have learned that Enid Dakers of ?Sparks? was signed by the female semi-pro team ?Universidad De La Salle Cancun? over the past weekend, to play in their upcoming season which commences on May 7, 2005. This signing while historical, is significant in three ways. Firstly it will play a large role in revitalizing interest in female basketball. Secondly it will expose these players to international competition, something that has been lacking ever since Belize played in the 1998 Caricom female tournament and thirdly, economically these players will be able to earn some money, while playing the sport they love. According to our reports the games will be played primarily on weekends, and should not affect any player?s permanent employment status in the jewel.
