?Alligator man? LIONMAN TRIATHLON

The fifth annual Lionman Triathlon will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2004. This Triathlon has become one of the most popular sporting events in Belize, primarily because of its novelty and the incorporation of three sporting disciplines ? swimming, cycling and running. This year the event moves to the Northside of Belize City with only one transition area, at the Sandlighters Promenade. The main sponsor for the 2004 Lionman Triathlon is the Regent Insurance Company.

Coach Bernie Tarr returns to take over Belmopan basketball

BELIZE CITY, Thurs., Aug. 5, 2004

With Belmopan Print Belize Blue Devils still winless in the 2004 BBA Summer Heat Basketball tournament, they went out and got coach from ?foreign.? Local teams were told this year that it would be a league for Belize without ?foreign talent?, but what the league didn?t say is what the Blue Devils did: they made a long distance call and netted a coach that isn?t a stranger to Belize ? Bernie Tarr.

Coach Tarr is currently the head basketball coach at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland in the United States. He has been coaching at the high school level for eleven years. Coach Tarr has an impressive r?sum?, but can that r?sum? help to bring back the Blue Devils from the bottom of the BBA?s standings?

Will Juventus hold serve and drink champagne? Or will Sagitun break through and bring the Big Dance to the MCC Garden?

Could it have been the overall rating or ranking that we gave Gatorade Juventus? ?portero? Giovanni Rodriguez in last week?s edition of the Amandala that had him flying around like Spiderman? Or was he just hyped about returning to his old stomping grounds at the Michael Ashcroft? In any case, Se?or Rodriguez, you saved your team?s bacon and we have to give you the big-ups for doing that. Giovanni was playing like a possessed man between the sticks stopping everything that came at him.

BTL Nets suspend Keith Acosta indefinitely

BELIZE CITY, Tues. July 27, 2004

Last Friday night at the Belize City Center, the BTL Nets demolished, demoralized, whipped, abused, okay we get the point. Those are just some of the nicer verbs that we can use in describing the 27-point blowout suffered by the Belmopan Blue Devils in the 80?53 loss.

The Nets never trailed in the game, but noticeably they were without one of their superstars and unquestionably one of the most talented players to ever lace up a pair of sneakers playing basketball for the Nets and for the nation of Belize ? Keith ?Superman? Acosta. Acosta was absent because he was across the border doing what he does best - ?hooping it up.? Whether he was absent without leave is yet to be answered, but judging by what is unfolding, we assume that he was AWOL.

Okay, the talking?s over ? BIG DANCE!!!

BELIZE CITY, Wed. July 28, 2004

When the word somehow leaked to Sagitun fans sometime in the week that they were contemplating playing their first game on the road, that shocked many of their fans who wanted to see or hear the logic behind going to Orange Walk?s People?s Stadium and giving up the home field advantage to Gatorade Juventus.

Call it luck, or call it destiny, but that notion had to be scrapped since the People?s Stadium will be busy with Orange Walk?s Fiestarama.

BPFL semifinals end Saturday night ? after that, the Big Dance!

The table for the Big Dance is all set, and going to the table this year are two teams that haven?t seen post season play in the past couple years - Big Bad Sagitun and Juventus, who of late added Gatorade and are now known as Gatorade Juventus.
