Chervin Tench freed of charge for taxi man’s murder

GeneralChervin Tench freed of charge for taxi man’s murder

BELIZE CITY, Fri. Aug. 20, 2021– Today, 20-year-old Chervin Tench was acquitted of a murder charge in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Tench had been the main suspect in the death of taxi driver Erwin Castillo, who was shot to death while driving his taxi late on a Friday night.

It is reported that Castillo had just dropped off a customer near Flamboyant Street around midnight. He was later ambushed by an unknown gunman who opened fire on him. Castillo had sped away in his vehicle in an attempt to flee from his attacker, but, following his gunshot injury, he lost control of the car, which crashed a nearby drain.

Tench, a resident of Flamboyant Street, was later arrested and charged for Castillo’s murder and has been on remand for the past eight months.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Cheryl-Lynn Vidal, ordered, however, that all charges against Tench in connection with the murder of Castillo be withdrawn due to lack of evidence. The defense had reportedly argued in court that Tench was not in Belize City at the time of the murder — claiming that he was in Dangriga mourning the death of his brother, Dwayne Cherrington, who died a few nights before the incident. As a result, Tench was freed of all charges.

Tench notably has been accused of involvement in a number of armed robberies. In the year 2019, Tench was allegedly a member of a group that burglarized the Belize Waste Control compound. In the prior year, he was arrested and charged for robbing a Brints Security guard of his 9mm pistol. Also, in 2015, he was reportedly involved in an armed heist in which approximately $52,753.25 was stolen from FirstCaribbean International Bank.
