City Boys stumble to end Super League regular season; playoffs next

SportsCity Boys stumble to end Super League regular season; playoffs next
With 4 teams already qualified to the playoffs in the 2011 Belize Bank Super League Tournament, the past weekend’s Week 14 matches were not considered important by two of the teams who couldn’t make the playoffs, but for two others it was important indeed, and one pulled off a surprising upset.

5th ranked Griga Knight’s forfeited to 2nd seed Orange Walk United, and 6th place Third World forfeited their final game of the regular season to 4th seed Placencia Assassin.

But winless cellar dwellers Cayo South United was not going down without a fight, and they took the long journey down south to the Toledo Union Field, where their grateful hosts, 3rd seed Paradise/Freedom Fighters took the opportunity to fine tune their game for the playoffs by putting a 4-0 drilling on the visitors. The Freedom Fighters attack engine seems to be firing on all cylinders, as Devon Makin (19 min), Alexander “Pleck” Peters (42 min), Ralph Flores (47 min penalty) and Frank Lopez (72 min) all joined in the scoring.

However, #1 seed defending champions Raymond Gentle-City Boys United did not enjoy such a pleasant experience from their visitors, as 7th place Hattieville Monarch FC became the first team to halt the scoring streak of City Boys captain Deon McCaulay, and also came away with the 2-1 road win with the help of a City Boys own goal. It was not the best way for the defending champs to end their regular season, and Hattieville can now claim to be one of only two teams to stop R.G. City Boys so far this season. David “Dav” McCaulay put City Boys in front at the 19th minute, but a City Boys auto goal tied the score at the 58th minute. Then it was time for the veteran striker Jerome “Jarro” James, no stranger to crunch time goals, to put the clincher for Hattieville at the 89th minute, for the 2-1 final score, Hattieville Monarch FC over Raymond Gentle-City Boys United.

Deon McCaulay had scored in every game of the tournament, until Hattieville stopped his scoring streak, which saw him with a regular season league leading 23 goals by our unofficial count.

The 4-team double round-robin playoffs begin this Sunday.
