Coach Bernie Tarr returns to take over Belmopan basketball

SportsCoach Bernie Tarr returns to take over Belmopan basketball

Bernie Tarr was named District Coach of the Year in Ohio in 1998 and 1999 and returned to get the award in 2003 and this year. He is no stranger to The Jewel. He coached the Belmopan Buca Bandits in 1996, when they had to win their last three games just to make it into the playoffs. Their last win came against the Raiders, but they eventually lost 3 games to 2 in the first round of the playoffs in what was reported to have been a good series.

In 1997 Tarr coached the national Under-19 Belize squad in Kingston, Jamaica. He was once again faced with having to win the last three games to qualify for the Final Four. Belize did so, but bowed out in the first round to host team Jamaica.

Since his arrival in Belmopan last Tuesday, the Belmopan Print Belize Blue Devils, according to our sources in the capital city, have been putting in great work with high morale heading into this week?s game against the Corozal Dolphins, whom they defeated in Corozal about three weeks ago.

In a phone interview with Coach Tarr, he says that he?s taking things one day at a time to try and improve each day.

?We gotta get better as a team. I think this team has more potential than the Buca Bandits but I have less time to put my program in, so we have to cram things and it is very important that we have a good turnout at the workouts,? said Coach Tarr. He also said that he?s sensing a tremendous amount of commitment, and the team can only get better with that.

In a speech to his team at yesterday?s practice session, he said ?There are no guarantees in wins or losses but I can guarantee that we will compete as a team and earn respect with our play….if we do that, we will be where we want to be when the season ends.?

Only time will tell. The Blue Devils debut with their new head coach Thursday night at the Belize City Center when they face the Corozal Dolphins.
