Con man preys on cosmetologist in Libertad

CrimeCon man preys on cosmetologist in Libertad

A con man in the Corozal District, posing as a lands officer in the Lands Department, boasted that he could get land for people in San Pedro and Cayo in less than a month after their first payment.

Grisel Botes, 31, a cosmetologist of Libertad, in the Corozal District, told police on Tuesday, June 3, that she paid him $23,875 in April for land in San Pedro and Cayo, but to date, she has not received any land, and her money has disappeared.

Police, who began their investigation, said that the man was not a lands officer. The man has since been detained, and will be charged at the conclusion of their investigation.

Botes told police that during April 3 to June 3, she had paid the man, whom she has known for the past 10 years and who lives in Patchakan, money amounting to $23,875 for a piece of land on San Pedro, and in the Cayo District.

The man told her that he was employed at the Lands Department, and that within a month from giving him the first payment for the parcels of land, which was done on April 3, the papers were going to be ready, but up to date she has not received the documents for the lands.

Police continue to investigate to find out if anyone else has been victimized by this con man.
